Yoga is considered to be about 6000 years old according to Professor Friedrich Max Mueller, a German expert in Sanskrit and Indian Studies who lived over 100 years ago. Other researches think that yoga may even be 10,000 years old. Yoga rules were systematically written down in the ‘Yoga Sutra’ by Patanjali, an Indian philosopher who lived in the third century BC. Patanjali is said to have defined yoga as a means to the cessation of the turning of the mind. Patanjali is regarded as the founder of formal yoga philosophy and is said to have organised yoga practice into an ‘eight limbed path’ which influences most styles of modern day yoga.
